ROSE

I seem to enjoy reading novels about disobedient women - women running away from responsibility, women making outsider art, women having breakdowns. It’s a fun time. I love Elena Ferrante, Ottessa Moshfegh, Karen Joy Fowler, Marilynne Robinson, George Saunders, Alice Munro and, of course, Jane Austen. I also love fantasy - my favourite contemporary fantasy authors are Vanessa Len, Naomi Novik and Shelley Parker-Chan. The best thing about working in a bookshop is pushing one of my favourite books into a customer’s hands knowing they’re (hopefully!) about to love it too. The second-best thing is discovering new books I wouldn’t have otherwise heard about. Matilda Bookshop is great at unearthing brilliant books that fly under the radar.

I most enjoy reading on the couch with my two dogs asleep on my feet. I would take Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen with me on a desert island. Persuasion may be my favourite Austen novel but Pride and Prejudice wins because it’s longer!
