MATILDA KIDS

We have a fantastic range of kids books in the bookshop - catch up on all the action here!

STORY TIME

Children are welcome to gather on the mat in our cosy shop to listen to three stories read by booksellers Kasey or Emilie at 10am each Monday.

Reading a book is one of the loveliest ways to spend time by yourself, but reading together is a joy shared! We look forward to seeing you there.

a book we love

Wolf Road by Alice Roberts

Here is something quite special for you readers...

The story of prehistoric girl Tuuli and her tribe looks at the heart of humanity with all of its grace and all of its natural foibles, by observing humankind at their very beginning.

The Swan clan live nomadic lives in the gloriously wild tundra; always beautiful, but often treacherous. Their day to day lives are physically demanding but they move in harmony with nature following its rhythms and relying on each other for safety and comfort. When two outsiders become known to curious Tuuli, a wolf cub and an unusual young man, a fundamental difference of opinion may fracture the clan and lead to hostility, even violence.

What is the best way to move forward in the world? By honouring tradition, upholding the old ways and maintaining wariness towards the unknown? Or is it wiser to follow the path of innovation? To take risks and trust even when the outcome is uncertain?

Absolutely immersive!

Tremendous Teens Book Club

Meet Rosie

Our brilliant new convenor of Tremendous Teens, Rosie loves picking books that will challenge, thrill and excite. Rosie studies at uni, works in fashion and listens to Taylor Swift.

Favourite Book of All Time: The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I even chose to study it at school and I still somehow love it.

Favourite Literary Character: Marianne from Normal People or Harold from A Little Life - I can’t choose!

Favourite Food: Either pho or sushi! I went to Vietnam when I was younger and had pho for breakfast two weeks straight.

A Little Fun Fact: I read the Harry Potter books so much when I was younger that the cover has fallen off on each and every one.

TREMENDOUS TEENS BOOK CLUB

Birdy by Sharon Kernot

The group as a whole enjoyed the book and many said it was their first verse novel they had liked! We were all particularly interested in the history of Maralinga - many of us having never heard of it despite it having happened in our own state. We particularly loved Maddy and Levi’s friendship and how it helped Maddy come out of her shell. We would definitely recommend this novel for anyone looking for an introduction into reading in verse!

MAGICAL MINDS BOOK CLUB

Andromache Between Worlds by Gabriel Bergmoser

Parallel universes certainly have been a theme in middle years fiction lately, and this month’s bookclub book brought parallel universes to us in spades!

We loved exploring different worlds with Andromache and contemplating where we might like her to visit next, and which world we would want to visit as well. Many of us really loved Andromache’s best friend Rylee, we appreciated her sassiness, rebelliousness and support of Andromache. Overall, we really enjoyed this world-bending extravaganza!
