KASEY

My reading taste is varied and influenced heavily by my mood and schedule. I read a lot of literary fiction, but don’t be misled – I also read a lot of not-so-literary fiction too. I’ll often have a history or nature writing book on the go, and I really enjoy reading children’s books – sometimes for work, sometimes because they’re just fun. Julia Armfield, Robbie Arnott, Carys Davies, Lydia Davis, Kazuo Ishiguro, Claire Keegan, Leila Slimani, Ali Smith, Andy Weir and Charlotte Wood feature heavily on my bookshelves. Finding the right book for the right person is one of my very favourite puzzles. It’s a certain kind of magic that never gets old. This is especially true of finding books for young people. We’ve all experienced the profound joy of finding a book that speaks to your soul, and it is such a privilege to watch that unfold in the kid’s room, either in a bookclub, a Storytime session or a random Thursday afternoon.

I cram reading time into the nooks and crannies of my days, in my car if I’m a few minutes early, my local coffee shop, the couch while my little one is preoccupied with playing or bed as I’m dozing off to sleep. I’ve been trying to read Anna Karenina since I was seventeen but I’ve just never had a solid block of time to devote to it. Every read, I get a bit further before it ends up discarded in favour of more pressing books. Being stranded without the lure of new releases might finally be the impetus I need.
