As the years have gone on, the books I’m most loving are the books with the least going on. No dialogue and no narrative arc suits me just fine these days. Easily my favourite part of working in a bookshop is putting a book in the hands of someone and having them come back later and telling me how much they loved the book. That’s a singular moment of magic that sustains every other element of working in a bookshop.
Reading in bed has always been, and will always be, a singular pleasure. Shirley Hazzard’s, The Transit of Venus would be my desert island book. There are so many layers in each of its perfect sentences that I’ve read something new every time I’ve read that novel. I’m sure I could keep being delighted anew each time.
