Weeds, like all plants are grouped according to their botanical relationships, such as monocotyledons (eg. grasses, sedges and bulbous plants) and dicotyledons (broadleaf flowering plants). They are also grouped according to their lifecycle, ie whether they are annuals, biennials, perennials or woody plants.
